Charlie's A Survivor!

Charlie Henry retired Ottawa Firefighter - 35 years on the job! His first love - fighting fires and saving lives.

Two years ago while suffering from what seemed to be kidney stones, a lump was discovered on my dad's pancreas . We were told not to worry about it unless it grew. My dad was monitored carefully every 6 months and unfortunately a year and a half later during one of those routine visits, we were given the diagnosis we had hoped would never come - PANCREATIC CANCER.

For the first time the doctors were saying my dad had cancer - Pancreatic cancer - the most aggressive, deadliest form of cancer that there is, as we were explained. But my dad was one of the lucky ones . He was operated on by the fabulous doctors at The Ottawa Civic Hospital and after spending 60+ days in hospital and numerous daily visits from the home care nurses when he was discharged, he was given a clean bill of health.

Prior to his diagnosis, he had talked with his oldest son Michael about planning a trip to the Great Wall of China. During his long days in the hospital recovering, he told us that if he was to be one of the lucky ones, he would make his dream come true and take the trip he had hoped to take.

Well, here he is - one of the very few lucky ones - and in keeping with his promise to us his family, Michael and my dad will be heading to China to walk the wall - November 2012.

Please join my family on this adventure and in so doing, we ask for a small donation to be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Canada Society to help eradicate this horrendous disease. Each day Michael will post pictures and a small update as to what and how they are getting along in China. So please come back and check on their progress!

Thank you for reading my dad's page and for making your contribution. Every dollar raised will be donated directly to the Canadian Pancreatic Cancer Society for cancer research.

With every small step we take in the fight against cancer, brings us one day closer to help find a cure.

On behalf of Joanne, Peter, Michael (Charlie's children) and Nan Henry (Charlie's wife) - thank you and god bless.

Sobering Facts

-4th leading cause of cancer deaths in CAN
-over 4100 new cases diagnosed in 2011, unfortunately ~4000 will not...
-75% diagnosed die in 1st year (THAT'S sobering)
-at this time, only 6% of patients live past 5 yrs after diagnosis, yes that means 94% don't make it past 5yrs
-BUT with YOUR help, we can slowly BUT SURELY SLICE AWAY AT THIS KILLER AND FIND SOLUTIONS!!!! Please help and donate, Like, Tweet, Link, Share, blog, post, etc!!!!
