Over the years my family has been gravely impacted by pancreatic cancer. My loving grandmother and mother of 14 lost her fight with the disease, my extremely giving and kind hearted uncle Joe lost his battle and most recently my uncle Silverio passed away from pancreatic cancer. My uncle Silverio was an amazing person. He was lively, energetic and had a contagious sense of humor. He was one of the funniest people I have ever met. Also, I wouldn't be doing him justice if I didn't at least mention his exceptional culinary skills. But despite all of these characteristics, what set him apart the most was his selflessness. He would sacrifice and give all for his friends and family. He was someone that would make you feel loved and welcomed, no matter who you are.
It is never easy when amazing people leave the earth and it is a constant reminder that we should be thankful for our friends and family and cherish the moments we spend with them.
If you stop and think about the number of people you know who have been affected by cancer, the sad reality is you can probably name more than a few. We all know too many people who have been impacted by cancer in some capacity and it is time to put a stop to it. Today, I have made the decision to no longer passively stand by while loved ones are taken too early. I have decided to help raise money towards awareness, research and a cure for pancreatic cancer in the best way I know how... running.
Our vision is twofold: 1) To raise funds toward research, awareness and one day a cure for pancreatic cancer in honor of Joe De Sousa, Silverio De Sousa, Eva Peddle and the thousands of people who have fought and are currently fighting the disease. 2) To encourage individuals to run or walk in remembrance and celebration of those who have lost their battle with cancer.

Reasons for Raising Awareness
It can strike anyone, at anytime. There is no known cause, no early detection, and limited treatment options. Pancreatic cancer claims nearly as many lives each year as breast and prostate cancer. It is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in Canada and the United States (pancan.org), yet remains underfunded and misunderstood.
Pancreatic cancer has the lowest relative survival rate of all the cancers tracked by both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute: 74% of patients die within the first year of diagnosis and only 6% will survive more than five years (pancan.org). In terms of survival rates, pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest of the cancers. The problem is people just aren't aware of the deadly nature of the disease and without awareness there is no funding, resulting in little medical advancement.
Why Support the Causes?
In 2010, the National Cancer Institute spent a mere 2% of its approximate $5 billion cancer research budget on pancreatic cancer research. Additionally, Charity Intelligence Canada cited pancreatic cancer as the most seriously underfunded cancer, receiving less than 1% of research and charitable funding. With such limited funding we are graciously asking for donations of any amount to help fund research for a cure. Thank you for your time and consideration.
