Not Just Another Day on the Greens!
A sold-out field of 216 golfers came out to support PANCREATIC CANCER Canada on Tuesday July 21st, at ClubLink's Emerald Hills. In addition to the great weather, participants enjoyed a variety of on-course contests including a chance to win two hole-in-one contests - a General Motors Car and a PGA National Trip.
Fan favourite, Mike "Pinball" Clemons, stopped by to pay hommage to our beloved number 31. Betty escorted "Pinball" from hole to hole where his passion, his sense of humour and his contagious smile resonated with all that he met. Like "Pinball" Clemons, who at 5'6", beat the odds and became the all-time CFL all purpose yardage leader, PANCREATIC CANCER Canada is committed to championing early detection research so that those diagnosed with this lethal disease have a chance to beat the odds!
Several Toronto Argonauts, including CFL Hall of Fame Running Back Bill Symons, The Fan 590 Colour Analyst and former linebacker Peter Martin and Gerry Sternberg came out to support this cause for their late friend, Dick. The Argo Thunder Cheerleaders posed with golfers in team photos and ran the fan favourite, Argo Football Toss. Argo All-Star Defensive End Jonathon Brown joined our golfers for dinner and helped Peter Martin with the ever popular Argo trivia contest.
A very important part of the evening was a cheque presentation to renown Drs. Malcolm Moore and Steven Gallinger of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH). The gift of $50,000 will enable PMH to purchase
an upgrade for the pancreas screening program. The upgrade to the MRI Scanner will give researchers the ability to get a clearer image of the pancreas during a MRI exam. The pancreas is typically hard to photograph because of its location behind the stomach.
Pancreatic Cancer is a silent killer. Like so many other cancers, the earlier the cancer is caught, the greater the chance of survival. However, with pancreatic cancer, there are no symptons and there is no way to screen for it. By the time symptoms appear, it's usually too late for a cure. For this reason, we are proud to champion early detection and have joined forces with Princess Margaret Hospital and their dedicated team of research doctors to fund a study that will determine the effectiveness of MRI and ultrasound in the early detection of pancreatic cancer.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our generous sponsors and participants; without your enthusiastic support, this tournament would not be possible!
Together, we can make a difference!
